* s0 I9 C2 Q- t: V* mEnigma这支来自德国的乐队，或多或少你都应该有所耳闻。他们是早期准许引进大陆的国外音乐之 一。从1996年的美国亚特兰大奥运会宣传片的主题曲Return To Innocence（返璞归真）一定给大家留下 了不少深刻的印象。

制作人Michael Cretu曾经道出过其中的玄机，事实上Michael Cretu一直想走出欧洲传统流行音乐的束缚，他所钟爱的音乐风格偏向于Pink Floyd和Yes，但这类非主流音乐类型在日益商业化的市场中已经越来越难听得到。Michael Cretu便开始朝着自己理想的王国迈进，自己写作，并且在不少作品中动用了两种非常奇特而且不为世人熟知的声音——秘鲁风格的排萧和由修道士演唱的类似格里高里圣歌风格的旋律，编曲上再衬以洒脱、懒散的Disco节奏，由此构成了Enigma极富个性的基本框架。因此在Michael Cretu所营造的独特音乐世界中，我们即可以隐约感受到古典严肃音乐的影子，又可以直接感受到通俗流行的电子配器；能听到最悠远的少数民族部落自由而悠长的吟唱，又能够欣赏到教堂唱诗班庄严而宏大的和声。也因为这些，Michael Cretu拒绝掌声和荣誉以及别人给Enigma“定制”的风格上的定义。! }2 H: p1 Q& |$ M7 s

4 t" r% A9 t5 E7 R6 r1990年10月， Enigma 的首支单曲 “Sadeness Part I” 首先推出，这首歌成为他们最著名的热门单曲。紧接着推出的个人专辑《MCMXC a.D》（公元前2000年）成为德国有史以来卖的最好的专辑，一共销售了1200万张，在41个国家登上了专辑排行榜冠军，并且在美国排行榜200名中停留了5年之久。在90年代流行音乐稳步前进的时候，谁也没想到 Enigma 居然没有追随标准成功的流行规则，而是运用了笛子和中世纪的圣歌的咏唱和电吉它、铜管等现代乐器，传达着现代人的气息、情感和能量。: k/ E1 M. z' o) C9 c
在1991年的时候，《MCMXC a.D》推出一个限量版本，增加了4首曲目，不过都是在原来专辑歌曲的基础上重新相互混音乐并延长而成，所以这张唱片从开头到结尾都有一气呵成的感觉。限量版唱片的封面设计与原先几乎完全相同，但是用一种灰暗色的绿背景代替了原来的黑色。总的来说，《MCMXC a.D》是90年代流行音乐史上的一张杰作，它的音乐具有高度的独创性且一次次地营造了一种独一无二的氛围。到目前为止，这种声音和氛围只有被另一位艺术家成功地模仿并改进过，就是 Delerium 和他们的专辑《Semantic Spaces》，而大多数人尝试这样的音乐都失败了。2年后他开始为电影《Sliver》（银色）作电影原声碟。
