2003年1月底，Sahara Dust开始录制他们的首张专集。这次乐队选择在德国录制这张专集，制作人是Sascha Paeth（制作过Rhapsody的许多专集），Luca Turili 和 Kamelot，虽然主唱Simone病了使得乐队有一小段时间停滞，不过这张专集仍是非常棒的，专集中的各首歌不能光用让人满意来概括，简直是太优秀了，而他们与制作人的合作也是相当愉快。用Mark的话来说就是：“我们经常意见统一。他确实将歌曲提高到一个更高的水平。
7 g: [- V" G- E4 Q# B& N4 j2003年3月乐队决定改名为Epica（Kamelot最近的一张专集名）。根据官方的说法，乐队成员想通过改新名字，出新专集得到一个新的开始，一次重生。. Y5 o7 z$ {/ \3 g; @
6月初Epica的首张专集"The Phantom Agony"正式登上商店货架。这张专集已经被许多金属杂志收录介绍了。Epica音乐中的一个重要组成部分是唱诗班的伴唱。与Mark的前乐队After Forever相比，Epica的唱诗班大概有以前的两倍大，在许多歌中这个6人的唱诗班扮演着最重要的角色。大部分的Epica成员还是电影音乐迷，特别是Hans Zimmer 和 Danny Elfman。这些影响在"The Phantom Agony"中都有体现，特别是专集的同名曲，更是优秀的电影音乐作品。% B) ?" r7 P3 H/ g& X" M1 D8 w

Epica正忙着宣传他们的专集：接受采访，当然也有现场演唱会什么的。乐队签署了著名的预约代理商MOJOconcerts。也就是说乐队不久就会有更多的特约演出。离开After Forever之后的 Mark Jansen变的更加成熟了，同时，还要感谢所有帮助他作音乐的音乐家们在歌曲上的贡献。

他们有一个合唱团 ( 有两个男高音和4个女高音） 和一列管弦乐队（3个小提琴、两个中提琴、两个大提琴和一个直立式贝斯）.
